Each divisional chart takes a single sign of 30 degrees and subdivides it into smaller, harmonic segments. When a planet appears promising in the D1 chart, astrologers look to the corresponding divisional chart (Varga) to see if that promise actually bears fruit.
1. The Shodashavargas: The 16 Primary Parashari Charts
Sage Parashara grouped the 16 core divisional charts into distinct tiers: Shadvarga (6 basic charts), Saptavarga (7 charts), Dashavarga (10 charts), and the complete Shodashavarga (16 charts).D1 — Rashi Chart (Gross Physical Plane)

• Significance: The physical body, overall health, foundational life path, vitality and external environment. It is the primary reference canvas for all other divisions.
D2 — Hora Chart (Wealth & Resources)
• Division: Half of a sign (15°).
• Significance: Liquid assets, financial accumulation, prosperity, self-earned wealth and financial stability. It divides each sign between the domains of the Sun (solar/masculine/effort) and the Moon (lunar/feminine/resource gathering).
D3 — Drekkana Chart (Siblings, Energy & Courage)
• Division: One-third of a sign (10°).
• Significance: Younger and older siblings, teammates, personal courage, stamina, initiative and drive. It is also used via the Jaimini Drekkana and Varnada Lagna to calculate longevity (Ayurdaya).
D4 — Chaturthamsha / Turyamsha (Home, Real Estate & Luck)
• Division: One-fourth of a sign (7° 30').
• Significance: Fixed assets, land, real estate, domestic happiness, home environment, fixed inheritances and general worldly fortunes (Bhagya).
D7 — Saptamsha (Children & Progeny Lineage)
• Division: One-seventh of a sign (4° 17' 08").
• Significance: Conception, children, grandchildren, fertility, creative legacy and the overall happiness derived from one’s progeny.
D9 — Navamsha (Dharma, Marriage & Destiny)
• Division: One-ninth of a sign (3° 20').
• Significance: The most essential divisional chart in Vedic Astrology. It reveals the inner potential of the soul, spiritual inclination (Dharma), the second half of life (post-maturation), and the nature, longevity and stability of the spouse and marriage. A planet weak in D1 but exalted in D9 gains hidden power.
D10 — Dashamsha (Career, Status & Public Action)
• Division: One-tenth of a sign (3° 00').
• Significance: Profession, public reputation, executive leadership, major career achievements, government honors, social influence and long-term legacy (Karma).
D12 — Dvadamsha (Parents & Ancestral Heritage)
• Division: One-twelfth of a sign (2° 30').
• Significance: The mother, father, ancestral roots, generational karmas and past-life conditioning inherited directly through the biological bloodline.
D16 — Shodashamsha / Kalashamsha (Vehicles, Pleasures & Comforts)
• Division: One-sixteenth of a sign (1° 52' 30").
• Significance: Conveyances, automobiles, general material luxuries, accidents during transit and inner contentment (Sukha) derived from material possessions.
D20 — Vimshamsha (Spiritual Practice & Devotion)

D27 — Saptavimshamsha / Nakshatramsha / Bhamsa (Inherent Strengths & Weaknesses)

• Significance: Physical stamina, subconscious endurance, vitality and deep psychological vulnerabilities that shape our reactions to crises.
D30 — Trimshamsha (Misfortunes, Evils & Arishta)
• Division: Unequal five-fold divisions assigned to the five non-luminary planets (Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury, Venus).

D40 — Khavedamsha / Swavedamsha (Auspicious and Inauspicious Karmas)
• Division: One-fortieth of a sign (0° 45').
• Significance: Higher spiritual and psychological blessings, past-life auspicious merits and ancestral habits inherited from the maternal lineage.
D45 — Akshavedamsha (Universal Well-Being & Integrity)
• Division: One-forty-fifth of a sign (0° 40').
• Significance: Purity of character, moral integrity, overall life balance and ancestral merits inherited from the paternal lineage.
D60 — Shashtiamsha (Past-Life Karma & Prarabdha)
• Division: One-sixtieth of a sign (0° 30').
• Significance: The highest-weighted divisional chart in Parashari astrology (holding more points in Vimsopaka Bala than the D1 chart itself). It reveals the specific Prarabdha Karma (ripened past-life actions) that dictates the events of the current incarnation. Because it changes roughly every two minutes, it requires precise birth-time verification.

D108 — Ashtottaramsha (Esoteric Spiritual Evolution)

• Significance: The foundation of South Indian Nadi Astrology. Each sign is split into 150 distinct, named arc segments (e.g. Brahma, Vaishnavi, Kubera). Identifying the native’s exact rising Nadi segment allows an astrologer to open specific ancient palm-leaf records containing predetermined life milestones.
The 4 Core Principles for Interpreting Divisional Charts
• The D1 Chart Sets the Ceiling: A divisional chart cannot manufacture an event that the D1 chart fundamentally denies. If the 7th house in the D1 chart denies marriage, an exalted Venus in the D9 chart can only provide artistic talent or internal peace, not an external union.• The Karyesh Planet (House Lord) is Primary: To study an area of life in a Varga chart, look to the ruler of that house from the D1 chart and see where it lands inside the divisional chart. For instance, find the D1 10th lord inside the D10 chart to read career trajectory.
• The Varga Lagna is the Gateway: The Ascendant of any divisional chart shows the individual's subjective attitude toward that specific domain. Malefics in the D10 Lagna show stress and friction in professional life; benefics in the D9 Lagna show natural relational grace.
• Vargottama Strength: When a planet occupies the exact same zodiac sign in both the D1 chart and the D9 Navamsha chart, it becomes Vargottama. This confers supreme structural strength, granting the planet the power to fulfill its significations regardless of other minor afflictions.
