In Vedic Astrology, Ashtakoot Kundali Milan is the traditional 36-point compatibility system used to evaluate the astrological alignment between two individuals for marriage. Based primarily on the position of the Moon in both birth charts (Janma Rashi and Nakshatra), this test assesses emotional, physical, financial and psychological harmony.

The system evaluates 8 distinct factors (Kootas), adding up to a total score of 36 points (Gunas).

The 8 Kootas & Point Distribution

1. Varna (1 Point)
• Factor Tested: Spiritual ego, work inclination and inherent temperament.
• Focus Area: Mental compatibility, mutual respect and social alignment between partners.

2. Vashya (2 Points)
• Factor Tested: Mutual attraction, affection and power dynamics.
• Focus Area: Balancing influence, emotional control and natural attraction in the relationship.

3. Tara (3 Points)
• Factor Tested: Birth star (Nakshatra) synergy and destiny.
• Focus Area: Long-term luck, health, prosperity and shared longevity after marriage.

4. Yoni (4 Points)

5. Graha Maitri (5 Points)
• Factor Tested: Friendship between the ruling Moon lords of both partners.

6. Gana (6 Points)

What Do the Scores Mean?

• Less than 19 Points: Not Recommended - High potential for incompatibility or frequent friction.

• 19 to 23 Points: Average Match - Acceptable; requires mutual effort and compromise.

• 23 to 31 Points: Good Match - Strong foundation for a healthy, prosperous marriage.

• 32 to 36 Points: Exceptional Match - Rare and highly harmonious partnership.

Key Doshas (Exceptions & Red Flags)

Even with a high overall score, certain major imbalances (Doshas) require careful evaluation:

• Nadi Dosha: Occurs when both partners belong to the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya). It indicates potential challenges regarding progeny or physical health.

• Bhakoot Dosha: Occurs when the Moon signs sit in 2nd/12th, 5th/9th, or 6th/8th relative positions, potentially causing financial or emotional strain.

• Gana Dosha: Occurs when temperaments conflict significantly (e.g., Deva vs. Rakshasa), requiring extra patience in daily communication.
